Even though Telegraph communication was heralded by David Morse in 1838 in USA Kerala had the first Telegraph offices at Trivandrum, Quilon and Alleppey only in 1864. By 1947 almost all  the District  Head Quarters in Kerala State ,Cochin State and Old Malabar had combined Post and Telegraph offices.

           In the case of Voice communication though it was invented by Graham Bell in 1875 ,it came to India in 1890 and in Kerala only in 1923 at Cochin with 100 line C B exchange , followed by  Calicut.

                 But Trivandrum had the first Telephone exchange a 10 Line Magneto Exchange in 1930 managed by the Travancore State Electricity Department .By 1947 we had only about 2500 telephones in the entire WestCoast. We had automatic exchanges in 1930 . By 1950 New Auto Exchanges were installed at Quilon, Kottayam and Alleppey.In 1950-'51 Travancore Telephone System was integrated with the Indian Post and Telegraph Department.

                  Kerala Telecommunication detached from Postal    Department in 74 and Kerala Telecommunication Circle was formed with Head Quarters at Trivandrum.

100 line Manual Exchange installed in Ernakulam
1924

A fifty line Magnet board was installed at Calicut

1937

50 line GEC RAX installed in Trichur

1938

Trivandrum and Quilon connected  on Trunk circuits and 140 line CB exchange installed at Quilon by the Travancore Electricity Department

1940

Exchanges opened at Changancherry ,Mundakkayam and Mavelikkara

1941

Exchange opened in Muvattupuzha and Alleppey

1943

Magneto exchange opened at Attingal.

1947

14th August CB Multiple Exchange commissioned in Trichur and Mattancherry.

1948

Trivandrum Auto exchange was opened
1950

Travancore State Telephone System maintained by the Travancore Electricity depertment was taken over by the postal department.

1968

First Cross Bar Exchange installed at Ernakulam

1970

Trivandrum Madras Coaxial system commissioned.

1973

First STD route in kerala opened between in Trivandrum and Kottayam

1974

Formation of Kerala Telecom Circle with Head Quarters at Trivandum on 1-9-1974 (It was combined Post and Telegraph Dept.

1975

First Trunk Automatic Exchange (TAX) commissioned in Trivandrum .Trivandrum delhi STD service opened.

1979

STD PCOs opened.

1985

CDOT switches introduced in Kerala Circle.

1986

First EDX(TELEX) switch commissioned at Ernakulam
      1987 Out of 608 telephone exchanges 434 has been interconnected by group dialling
1988 E10B Tax commissioned in Ernakulam
1994 AXE switch introduced in Trivandrum, Ernakulam and Calicut.
1997 OCB switch introduced in Kerala.CDTMX with 5ESS technology commissioned in Ernakulam.CDTMX with ILT switch   commissioned in Palakkad.
1998 DTS starts Internet services.Kerala Telecom website (www.keralatelecom.com) launched.
1999 Directory published in CD.IN services opened.
2000

October 1st -BSNL formed

2000 National Internet Back Bone opened in all district head quarters. Sancharnet becomes operational.Internet Dhabas opened in all 152 Block Head Quarters.
2001 Call Centres opened at Trivandrum, Ernakulam and Trichur.WLL exchange commisioned in Ernakulam.
2002 October 23 CELLONE Mobile service Launched.
2003 Direct Internet Access(DIAS) facility introduced. All India Online PGRMS Introduced
2004 Data Centre at Trivandrum opened on April 19. Inventory Management System Introduced. Directory Enquiry through SMS launched on August 15. General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) & Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) are introduced in Kerala Circle on 16.11.04. Siemens SWitch introduced at Trivandrum 0n 30-11-2004. LNMS Services introduced in Kerala Circle.
2005 MPLS VPN Services introduced. Broad Band Services are introduced. On-Line Directory Services launched in keralatelecom website on 05-12-2005.
2006 BSNL kerala Circle has become the No.1 Telecom Service Provider in the State. The Circle has the 2nd largest basic service network out of the 24 Telecom Circles in the country. In Kerala, BSNL is the No.1 Cellular Service Provider. Broadband services have been made functional in 188 sites covering all SSAs. Wi-fi Services launched. OneIndia Plan Introduced. All India WTMS Introduced.
2007 Customer Care Portal launched. BSNL Kerala crossed 20 Lakhs Cellone Customer milestone during August 2007.
