Kannur , the capital of
erstwhile Kolathiri Rajas has carved a niche in the socio-political history of the
state. The famous Bakel fort at Kannur ,the Muthappan Temple of
Parassinikkadavu are major tourist attractions. Many folk art and dance forms have
roots in the socio-religious culture of the district.Theyyam and Kavadiyattam were nurtured and nourished by
artists from Kannur. Kannur and Kasragod revenue districts come under Kannur SSA which includes
Uppala, Kanhangad, Payyannur, Taliparamba, Telichery, Cannanore and Kasargod SDCAs (Short
